Hydra vs LekkaCard
Hydra

Choose LekkaCard if you want a straightforward digital stamp-card programme with published customer limits and self-service plans. Choose Hydra if you want to recognise where each customer is in the relationship, then use configurable campaigns, rewards and optional WhatsApp messaging to encourage the next visit.
Both products let customers participate without downloading an app. The main buying decision is therefore not app versus no app. It is whether your loyalty workflow should revolve around collecting stamps or around recognising new, returning and lapsed customers and deciding what to do next.

How customers join and participate

LekkaCard: a digital card built around the counter QR
LekkaCard replaces paper punch cards with a digital loyalty card. A QR stamp station works on any phone, customers do not need to download an app, and no payment platform or dedicated card machine is required. Customers can collect stamps and self-redeem rewards. See LekkaCard’s business and plan overview.
This is a familiar workflow for businesses such as cafés, car washes and retailers:
- The customer joins the loyalty programme.
- A qualifying purchase or visit earns a stamp.
- The customer works towards a stated reward.
- The customer redeems the reward after reaching the required number of stamps.
For example, Molly’s Cafe’s LekkaCard programme offers a tenth cup after nine stamps. LekkaCard also supports multiple reward programmes and intermediate rewards rather than limiting every business to one end-of-card benefit.
Hydra: joining is the start of a recognition workflow
With Hydra, customers can join through the business’s QR code or, when connected, by messaging its business WhatsApp number. WhatsApp is optional: a business can use QR joining and have its team record visits without connecting WhatsApp. Customers do not need a member app. See how Hydra joining works.
The emphasis then moves from joining to recognition. Staff can identify returning members and record qualifying visits, while the business can see whether someone has just joined, is progressing through a campaign, has reached a goal or has not visited recently.
Hydra Merchant gives owners an iPhone and Android view of customer activity and campaign progress. This is a business-side app; customers are not required to install one.
How visits and loyalty progress are recorded
LekkaCard centres the till workflow on awarding stamps. Its QR stamp station works on a phone, and its dashboard provides a customer list and visit history. LekkaCard says businesses can see their most loyal customers, how often they visit and when they last visited. Its reports cover programme growth and stamp activity, with more detailed insights available on higher plans. These capabilities are outlined on the LekkaCard website.
Hydra asks staff to record qualifying visits. Active campaigns then track each participating customer’s progress towards the goal set by the business. This makes the staff action simple, but gives the business flexibility in what that visit means within a campaign. For example, it could advance a repeat-visit reward rather than add a stamp to one permanent card.
When comparing the two, map the till action carefully:
- If staff and customers already understand “buy or visit, then collect a stamp”, LekkaCard closely matches that mental model.
- If staff should recognise the customer and record a qualifying visit that may count towards different campaigns, Hydra is the more natural fit.
Reward design
LekkaCard rewards
LekkaCard is strongest when the reward can be expressed clearly as stamp progress. A business can define a reward after a set number of stamps and can offer more than one programme. Its Free plan also includes multi-event rewards, described as a “halfway” treat.
That approach makes the value easy for customers to understand. A message such as “collect nine stamps and your tenth coffee is free” requires little explanation.
Hydra rewards
Hydra lets the business choose the audience, goal and reward for each campaign. Its examples include:
- a welcome gift for a new member;
- a reward for completing a repeat-visit goal;
- a reward supplied by the business, such as a coffee;
- gift vouchers from participating retailers.
Eligible Hydra points can be exchanged for retailer gift vouchers. Available retailers, voucher values and points requirements can vary. The Hydra rewards overview lists participating retailers such as Pick n Pay, Dis-Chem, Nando’s, Nike, Cape Union Mart and iStore.
This model suits businesses that want different reasons to return at different stages of the customer relationship. The welcome for a first-time member does not have to be the same as the reward offered to an established regular.
Retention and customer follow-up
LekkaCard provides a customer list and visit history, helping a business see who visits often and when someone was last seen. Paid plans can add broadcasts to regulars, while Growth adds more advanced measures such as return rate, busiest periods and top customers. This supports a list-and-report workflow: review the customer base, identify an audience and send a relevant broadcast.
Hydra frames retention around customer status. Our approach is to help the business distinguish between someone who has just joined, someone returning regularly, someone close to earning a reward and someone who has not visited in a while. The business can activate welcome and visit campaigns now; re-engagement campaigns for inactive members are coming soon.
Hydra can also connect an official business WhatsApp number when the business wants WhatsApp messaging. The connection is optional, so a business can begin with QR joining and staff-recorded visits instead. More detail is available in the Hydra product FAQs.
The practical difference is one of operating rhythm:
- LekkaCard suits a business that wants to monitor a loyalty list, stamp activity and visit history, then communicate with its regulars.
- Hydra suits a business that wants campaigns to reflect different customer stages, with re-engagement for inactive members coming soon.
Plans, customer limits and setup
LekkaCard publishes a clear self-service path:
- Free forever: R0, no credit card and no expiry, for up to 50 loyal customers.
- Starter: R249 per month, with no VAT added, for up to 250 loyal customers. It includes broadcasts, basic insights and a daily digest.
- Growth: R499 per month, adding features including custom branding, referrals, Google review prompts and advanced insights.
- LekkaCard states that additional plans extend up to R999 per month, with no lock-in contract.
The current conditions and included features appear in LekkaCard’s pricing section.
Hydra uses a demo-led starting process. We ask about how customers should join, what the business wants to reward and what setup it needs.
This distinction may decide the purchase by itself. LekkaCard gives a small business an immediate, published entry point. Hydra is better evaluated through a workflow discussion to really understand the business goals and come up with a customized flow before setup.
Which should your business choose?
Choose LekkaCard if:
- you want a recognisable digital stamp-card experience;
- your main goal is to reward repeat purchases or visits after a fixed number of stamps;
- customer self-redemption is important;
- you want to start independently with a free plan;
- published customer limits and monthly prices make purchasing easier.
Choose Hydra if:
- you want to recognise new, returning and lapsed customers as different audiences;
- you want welcome and repeat-visit campaigns, with re-engagement campaigns for inactive members coming soon;
- you need to configure the audience, goal and reward for each campaign;
- retailer gift vouchers are relevant to your reward strategy;
- optional joining or messaging through your business WhatsApp number fits your customer communication;
- you prefer to discuss the workflow and setup before going live.
Verdict and next step
LekkaCard is the better fit for a small business whose loyalty programme should behave like a digital stamp card with a clear, self-service starting point.
Hydra is the better fit when loyalty is part of a broader customer-recognition process, with welcome and visit rewards now and re-engagement for inactive members coming soon.
Before deciding, map your current workflow in four steps:
- How does a customer join?
- What must staff do to record a qualifying visit?
- What reward should each customer work towards?
- How will you follow up with regulars and customers who stop returning?
If that exercise reveals that you need more than one campaign or customer journey, request a Hydra demo to walk through the joining, reward and follow-up setup your business needs.
